Change in Minimum Ages

The Villages of Wellington Board of Directors elected at the February meeting to officially change the minimum age at which a child can be at the pool without adult supervision from 10 years to 12 years.  (Children who are 10 or 11 may still take a swim test administered by pool management; children who pass will be eligible to attend the pool alone, with a signed parental consent form.)

If your child is under the age of 12, he or she may not enter the pool area without an adult or babysitter; a babysitter must be at least 14 years of age.  The board, along with the pool managers, believes that the new age standards will help to ensure the safety of our residents and children.  Previously, our age minimum was much lower than most neighborhood and public pools, and as a consequence, lifeguards saw many young children left alone at the pool all day.  It was difficult for lifeguards to pay adequate attention to other swimmers when they also had to babysit children as young as seven.  It is our hope that parents will carefully consider their older children's swimming skills when allowing them to be alone at the pool.

We hope to have another safe and exciting summer!
